What's My Dosha? A Simple Guide to Vata, Pitta & Kapha
In Ayurveda, your dosha is your mind-body type — the unique blend of energies that shapes your body, your temperament, your digestion and even how you handle stress. Discovering yours is the first step to choosing the foods, herbs and routines that will help you feel your best.
Everyone is born with all three doshas, but usually one or two lead the way. Below you will find clear descriptions of each, a quick self-check to spot your dominant type, and what helps bring each back into balance.

The three doshas — Vata, Pitta and Kapha — are the fundamental energies Ayurveda uses to describe everything in nature, including us. Health is keeping your natural blend in balance; discomfort arises when one grows too strong. For the bigger picture, see our full guide to what Ayurveda is.
The three doshas at a glance
Vata — air & space (movement)
Quick, creative, energetic and light. Vata types are often slim, imaginative and lively, but when out of balance can feel anxious, restless, ungrounded, with dry skin and irregular sleep or digestion.
Pitta — fire & water (transformation)
Sharp, driven, warm and focused. Pitta types tend to have a strong appetite and intellect, but excess Pitta can show up as irritability, impatience, inflammation, heat and burnout.
Kapha — earth & water (structure)
Calm, steady, loyal and strong. Kapha types are grounded and nurturing, but too much Kapha can bring sluggishness, weight gain, congestion and low motivation.
How to find your dosha
Look at your long-term tendencies rather than how you feel on one unusual day. Consider your body frame, energy, digestion, sleep, skin, and how you react under pressure. Then see which list below sounds most like you.
You may be Vata-dominant if you...
- Have a light, slim frame and find it hard to gain weight
- Think and talk quickly, love new ideas, but tire easily
- Tend toward dry skin, cold hands, and variable digestion
- Feel anxious or scattered when stressed
You may be Pitta-dominant if you...
- Have a medium, athletic build and strong appetite
- Are focused, ambitious and a natural organiser
- Run warm and dislike heat
- Become irritable or intense when stressed
You may be Kapha-dominant if you...
- Have a solid, sturdy frame and gain weight easily
- Are calm, patient, caring and steady
- Have smooth skin and sleep deeply
- Become withdrawn or sluggish when stressed
Most people recognise themselves in one or two of these. If two feel equally true, you are likely a dual-dosha type, such as Vata-Pitta.

Frequently asked questions
What are the three doshas?
The three doshas are Vata (air and space, governing movement), Pitta (fire and water, governing transformation and digestion) and Kapha (earth and water, governing structure and stability). Everyone is a unique blend of all three.
How do I know my dosha?
Your dominant dosha shows up in your body type, energy, digestion, temperament and how you respond to stress. Reading the trait descriptions for each dosha and noticing which feels most like you is a good start; an Ayurvedic practitioner can confirm it.
Can you have two doshas?
Yes. Many people are dual-dosha, meaning two doshas are roughly equally strong, such as Vata-Pitta or Pitta-Kapha. A smaller number are balanced across all three.
Does my dosha change?
Your underlying constitution is considered fixed from birth, but your current balance shifts with season, diet, stress and lifestyle. Ayurveda works by bringing your current state back toward your natural balance.
What is the rarest dosha?
A perfectly balanced, equal mix of all three doshas is considered the least common. Most people have one or two clearly dominant doshas.
